17³Ô¹Ï's Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a concentration in math education is best suited for those preparing to teach mathematics at the secondary level in the public or private schools. This degree plan is similar to the B.A. and B.S. in Mathematics program except that education coursework is introduced in the student's third and fourth year to prepare them to be a professional educator.

By enrolling in this program, you will have the opportunity to develop greater depth in your mathematical programs that way you can convey your knowledge to younger generations. To become a certified teacher in Texas, you must complete an undergraduate degree, pass state exams in both a subject area and in pedagogy and must comply with other state requirements.

Math Education Courses You May Take

Linear Algebra: This course introduces and provides models for application of the concepts of vector algebra. Topics include finite dimensional vector spaces and their geometric significance; representing and solving systems of linear equations using multiple methods, including Gaussian elimination and matrix inversion; matrices; determinants; linear transformations; quadradic forms, eigenvalues and eigenvectors; and applications in science and engineering.

History of Mathematics: Historical origin and development of mathematical concepts through the sixteenth century. Topics include Egyptian and Babylonian mathematics, Greek mathematics, and early European mathematics.

Intro to Teacher Education: An orientation to the organization and professional components of education in the United States with emphasis on Teacher Education in Texas.

Human Development and Learning: This course focuses on human development and appropriate learning and teaching theories. Developmental theories and issues as well as psychological principles involved in education, with emphasis on learning theories and practical application of psychological principles to learning and teaching. 

Secondary Curric/Methodology: The structure and organization of the curriculum, materials, methods and types of assessment used in secondary schools.
