Education & Human Development

MEd in Literacy Leadership – changing course prefixes from PEDG to READ

Council members vote to send this back to the department to update and then we will review it once the updates have been resubmitted. The department needs to use the approved version of the course in the education core (PEDG 5307) or submit a brand new syllabus; course description, and student learning outcomes for PEDG 5310 including a request to reactivate the course. The degree plan needs to be updated to match.

Engineering

Civil Engineering – proposing one course addition. In the last meeting, civil engineering course tabled and the department is only proceeding with this one course addition. We have now received updated syllabi for this course with updated course objectives and student learning outcomes to match rigor and blooms higher taxonomy.

The council members does not approve this items. They elect to send the request back to the department for clarification. Firstly, as stated, the syllabus does not assure students how they will be graded. The syllabus does not state on what grounds the grading policy can be adjusted. Also, it lacks a clear attendance policy and a detailed course calendar with specific due dates. The syllabus also needs greater detail and clearer alignment and between the course objectives, student learning outcomes, and assessments.

Lastly, the council members are requesting a specific degree plan. The current degree plan submitted lacks structure and is vague.

History – proposing 5 course changes and 8 course additions

All changes and additions, except 5306, were submitted to differentiate graduate and undergraduate level courses.

5306 - The retitling of this course (1) transitions it away from studying the full sweep  of women's and gender history in the United States to treating it as the first half of a two-course sequence; and (2) makes the title consistent with the undergraduate (HIST 4306) version of the course.

Explanation of Modification Request

Program Name Change & Reduction of Hours

“The Department of Nutrition, Hospitality & Human Services is requesting to modify the existing Master of Science in Hospitality Leadership degree program to change the literaname and reduce the number of hours in the program from 36 hours to 30 hours.

The department is requesting the name be changed from the Master of Science in Hospitality Leadership degree to the Master of Science in Hospitality Management degree. This new name better aligns within the field of hospitality and the most recent market analysis.

The department also is requesting to reduce the 36-hour degree to a 30-hour degree. The program requests to remove two courses (HOSP 5373 and HOSP 5357) from the course degree plan. The option for qualified students to apply for a 6-hour experience waiver for HOSP 5361 and HOSP 5360 will remain within the program. For qualified  students who have a 6-hour course waiver approved, the total hours completed will be reduced to 24 hours. Students can transfer up to 6 hours of approved graduate credit into the program.

All of the requested changes will better meet student needs and marketplace demands. The degree changes requested allow for the degree program to be completed in a timely manner to allow students to enter the hospitality field with marketable skills.

Motion to Approve under conditions; 1st Neil Faulk, 2nd Christina Rios

Conditions: HOSP 5371 has 5341 as a pre-requisite but is listed in the same term. The council members recommend updating that pre-requisite to prior OR co-requisite.
